Macau Casinos

Gambling in Macau (or Macao) was legalized in 1850, under Portuguese rule, and since that time it has been known as the "Monte Carlo of the Orient." Both foreign and domestic corporations have invested heavily in Macau casinos, and tourists frequently visit them from Hong Kong and the mainland of the People's Republic of China. In fact, gambling and tourism are the chief sources of income in Macau.

There are a number of casinos in Macau, all operating under government rules and regulations, and most are open 24 hours a day. Games at Macau casinos include blackjack, roulette, boule, sic bo, Fan-Tan, keno, and the very popular game of baccarat.

The largest of the Macau casinos is the Casino Lisboa, a four-story complex originally built in the early 1970's, by a Stanley Ho company. The Casino Lisboa in downtown Macau has been enlarged to a total of 927 rooms and another extension is planned to meet the competition of the adjacent Wynn Macau, owned by Steve Wynn of Las Vegas.

In comparison, the Floating Palace, located on a barge about a five-minute walk from the ferry terminal, is the smallest Macau casino. The second deck has six baccarat tables, two for blackjack, and two for dai-siu and sic bo. In addition, there is a small slot machine room and other areas that are probably used for private gambling games. For a change of pace in a quieter atmosphere, the Floating Palace has low table limits and is a good option to consider.

The Pharoah's Casino, within the 5-star Landmark Hotel, is in a prime city center location. The Pharaoh's, on the 3rd floor, offers a luxurious gambling experience, with 383 slots and 19 table games including baccarat, roulette, nine tables of poker, and eight of blackjack.

In addition, Macau casinos include the Fortuna in the Hotel Fortuna, conveniently located within walking distance of the shopping and business districts, and the Casino Golden Dragon. Located on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the popular Hotel Golden Dragon, it has 72,600 square feet of lively, carnival-like atmosphere. The décor of the Golden Dragon is based upon festivals from Europe, China, America, and Latin America, including a Spanish fire lighting display on the ceiling of the main gambling floor. Six of the VIP rooms feature the Trinidad carnival, the Venice mask festival, 19th century Paris, Mardi Gras, the Carnivale de Rio de Janeiro, and Chinese dragon dancing. The Casino Golden Dragon, with 85 gaming tables (15 for VIPs), 3-card poker, baccarat, sic bo, and blackjack, and 137 slots is filled with fun and excitement.

For a time, Macau casinos, for the most part, did not have the glitz and glamor of Vegas or Atlantic City, but with the influx of foreign investors that too is changing.

Company Statistics for the 4th Quarter 2009
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total 674 new companies were incorporated in the fourth quarter of 2009, up by 24.1% year-on-year; the total value of registered capital rose notably by 76.8% to MOP140 million, as the registered capital of new incorporations of the Financial Services recorded a 90-fold increase (MOP53 million). In the fourth quarter of 2009, number of companies in dissolution totalled 123 and the value of registered capital amounted to MOP22 million, of which 33 engaged in Wholesale & Retail trade.
MGTO Pushes PCO Management in Macau

The Historical Archives of Macao will hold another of its popular binding workshops on Saturday 6th of February from 2pm to 5pm. This time the focus will be on making an attractive pocket book consisting of a single large sheet of folded paper enclosed between two covers. The book can either be expanded outward or kept flat.
External Merchandise Trade Statistics for December 2009
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the value of total exports of goods amounted to MOP680 million in December 2009, down by 25.5% year-on-year, with the value of domestic exports falling by 60.2% to MOP200 million, but that of re-exports rising by 17.1% to MOP480 million. The value of total imports of goods registered an increase for two consecutive months, up by 10.6% year-on-year to MOP3.62 billion. A trade deficit of MOP2.94 billion was recorded for December 2009.
Wages of Construction Workers and Prices of Construction Materials for the 4th Quarter 2009
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the average daily wage of construction workers was MOP529 in the fourth quarter of 2009, up by 1.1% quarter-to-quarter. The average daily wage of skilled & semi-skilled workers (MOP566) rose by 0.7%, of which welders (MOP637), carpenters (MOP620) and structural iron erectors (MOP608) were earning higher average wages; meanwhile, the average daily wage of unskilled workers (MOP357) registered an increase of 2.0%.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Macao SAR (AACM) has been participating in regional cooperation with other countries or places for the purpose of sharing resources. Among the cooperation projects with the aeronautical authorities of mainland China and Hong Kong was the Cooperation Arrangement of Mutual Acceptance of Approval of Aircraft Maintenance Organizations (AMO) signed in 2002. The three parties have then worked in close cooperation. On 28 and 29 January, the three parties held the yearly Joint Maintenance Management (JMM) Steering Committee Meeting and discussed two focused issues on the mutual acceptance of aircraft maintenance training organizations and aircraft maintenance licensing.
Macau Incentive Product Assessment Forum Concluded with Success
The ?Macau Incentive Product Assessment Forum?, which was organised by the Macau Business Tourism Centre (MBTC) of Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) from 25th ? 28th January, concluded successfully in Macau yesterday. The Forum invited 18 leading industry experts flying in from Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea and the United States, who are CEOs and Senior Management of leading incentive houses, Destination Management Companies (DMCs) and event companies that operate in Asia, to participate in a series of incentive designed programs and presentations. The Forum is one of many projects being undertaken by the MBTC to help develop Macau?s MICE product offering.
